The Menihek Nordic Ski Club runs a very successful Junior DevelopmentSki Program with an average enrollment of 100 youth plus, ranging from 4-16 years of age. The program is run under the supervision of level II coaches, Rhonda Lawrence and Alf Parsons, and a number of qualified instructors who volunteer their time every Saturday. From rock bottom in the mid 1980's to a resounding success in 1999, that's the story of Junior Development at Menihek Nordic in Labrador West. Today and for the past number of years our program has been under the direction of Level II coaches Rhonda Lawrence and Alf Parsons. They have with them a group of dedicated Jackrabbit Leaders and Level 1 coaches. In the development process we received assistance from coaches who have made their name in cross-country skiing such as Eddie Krats, John Brown, and Richard Thomas. Along with the support of the town of Labrador City and the local business community, Menihek Nordic has reached a level we can be proud of in our youth development. We now have over a hundred youth in our program, one of the highest numbers of any club in the province and in Atlantic Canada for that matter. For the really young (4-8 years) there is Ski Mode, Jackrabbits for 8-13 years, and Racing Rabbits for youth showing interest and potential. The emphasis is placed on fun and involvement. The older kids provide good role models for the younger ones and this can only bode well for the future. We have a School Ski Program for Grade 5 classes at Joseph R. Smallwood Collegiate. This involves over 350 skiers visits per season.
