Alf Parsons Wins Silver in First World Masters Race

With sixty-eight competitors in his age category, Alf Parsons captured his first medal at the World Masters Ski Championships in Quebec City. In the 30km distance freestyle event Alf crossed the line in second place with a time of one hour twenty minutes . First place went to a skier from Germany, beating Alf by only 34 seconds. Alf beat the third place skier, an American, by a mere four seconds. Alf says the pressure is off now since he went with the goal of getting a medal. Now he can enjoy his remaining races which will include being part of the Canadian relay team for Wednesday"s relay race. In a phone conversation with Rhonda Lawrence he said his skis for the first race were wicked. Alf has spent a lot of time training this winter and has taken a lot of time to learn the ins and outs of proper waxing for different conditions. All this has paid off in his silver medal. He still has three more races before the championships conclude so he could possibly be bringing home more than one medal to add to his collection.

The Loppet is finally here and will be run on Saturday, March 9th. Don't forget to sign up for the free pasta supper on Friday, March 8th. A great time to carbo load for the next day. If you are renting skis from the club or renting one of the Polk sleds they must be picked up no later than 5pm on Friday, March 8th. We had a very successful Loppet Poster contest for grade 4-6 from J.R. Smallwood school with a total of 65 posters being judged. All these posters are now on display at the Labrador Mall so be sure to drop by and take a look. First place in each grade level received a twenty-five dollar prize. In grade 4 first place went to Chad Gale, Danielle Brown took first place in grade 5, with Karisa and Taylor Ryan sharing the prize for grade 6. Thank you to all the students who took part. You did a wonderful job and made by job as a judge very difficult.

Jackrabbits will be cancelled for March 9th and the chalet will be closed that day for the Loppet. We would like to encourage all Jackrabbits and their parents to take part in the Loppet. The 10km course starts at Duley Park and has a foretop along the way where you can rest and get some food and drink. Busses leave from behind the Mall on the morning of the Loppet and will take you to the start area at Duley. Ski Patrollers and skidoo patrols are all along the trail should anyone need assistance. It's a great way to spend the day in the great Labrador wilderness and enjoy a family outing together.

Four of our high school skiers recently took part in the high school games in Deep Cove on the Northern Peninsula. Stephanie and Jessica Corbett, Sabrina Lawlor and Pamela O'Keefe took first place in the relay race held at the games. Stephanie captured a silver medal in an individual race with Jessica taking the bronze. Jessica, Pamela and Sabrina will hardly have time to catch their breath before they leave again to compete in the Winter Games. Stephanie will have a few days to rest up before she heads out to Canmore, Alberta , to ski with the Provincial Ski Team at the Junior Nationals.
