The 27th Great Labrador Loppet Is A Huge Success

The weather was great with lots of Labrador sunshine and no wind as 190 skiers headed out to complete the annual Great Labrador Loppet. The largest group skied the 27km course with the 10km distance taking second place and eight hardy souls tackling the 54km distance. Skiers came from Goose Bay, North West River, New Brunswick, Fermont, and even one from as far away as Australia to ski in this year's Loppet. We were very pleased with the turn out considering the weather the week prior to the event.

An event of this size would not be possible without the help of many volunteers, sponsors and donations from businesses and individuals. A special thank you goes out to everyone who helped in any way to make this year's Loppet such a great success.

The first female across the line in the 27km event was Rhonda Lawrence with the first male being Alf parsons. In the 54km distance the first competitor to cross the line was Warren Payne. The youngest skier in the 27km distance was10 year old David Graham of North West River , with the youngest at heart award for the day going to Stella James who skied the 10km course. The largest team was, once again, the Mad Hatters headed up by Ben James. The largest family to take part was the Lawlor family with all seven members skiing one of the distances. The turtle award for the last to cross the finish was shared by Jonathan Pike, Chad Winter and Rachelle Lawlor who skied with the two boys since it was their first attempt at the 27km distance. Chloe Tinkler took the Thelma Piercey Memorial Award for the fastest junior skier in the 27km event with a finish time of 3:25.
