MEDAL WINNER AT ATLANTICS

Young Jessica Corbett of Labrador West was a two medal winner at the recent Atlantic Cross Country Ski Championships held in Prince Edward Island. The weather on Saturday morning was not great forcing the race to be delayed until later in the day. Being from Labrador and being used to unfavourable weather must have been an asset for Jessica as she crossed the finish line in 23:06 for the 5km distance to capture the gold medal in her age category. On Sunday, in the 5km freestyle event, Jessica took a fall but still managed to get herself back in the race to finish in second place for the silver medal. She returns to Labrador long enough to get some more training in before leaving for the Provincial Championships on February 16th and 17th, and then on to the Winter Games February 27th to March 2nd.

Four Masters skiers from the local club will be taking part in the Provincial Masters Championships in Stephenville on February 9th and 10th.. Rhonda Lawrence, Cynthia McLoughlan, Alf Parsons and Gerry Rideout will try to bring home some medals from the two day event.

The following weekend the club has sixteen skiers heading to Corner Brook to the Provincial Championships. Stephanie and Jessica Corbett, Pamela O'Keefe, Kelsie Harte,Calandra Lawlor,Rhonda Lawrence,Gregory Wheaton, Jonathan Pike,Alexander and Charlie Mitchell ,Joey Mackie, Kyle, Judy and Phil Power, Alf Parsons and Gerry Rideout will all tape part in the races. We will give race results the following week for you.

Due to the large number of leaders going out to the Provincials we will be cancelling Jackrabbits for Saturday, February 16th.

The Early Bird Draw date for the Loppet has been moved from February 16th to March 1st. If you are registered for the Loppet by March 1st your name will go in for that draw. The prize will be a $50.00 gift certificate from Parski Sports donated by Alf Parsons.

Don't forget the FREE pasta supper on Friday, March 8th, the evening before the Loppet. When you register for the Loppet you will receive a ticket for this event. We have two sittings , one at 5pm and one at 7pm. A great opportunity to do some carbo loading and sit around with other skiers and plan the next day's strategy.

The Arctic Mirage ice palace is under construction in the parking lot of the ski chalet. Last week is was only a large mound of snow and is taking shape daily. It's quite a transformation to watch as Greg Daigle and his band of workers chisel and saw away at it .Plan a trip up Smokey Mountain Road to see this ice and snow creation.

A Level 1 Coaching clinic was given at the chalet on February 1st-3rd to a group of people from coastal Labrador. The communities of Cartwright, Rigolet,West St.Modeste, Forteau, St.Lewis and Goose Bay all had representatives at the clinic. This project started last year with the hope of getting cross country skiing started in all communities along the coast. Four of the people present had been here last year for the clinic and jumped at the opportunity to take the course again. Robert Hancock is a gym teacher from Forteau who attended and thought the idea was terrific and hopes to get a program started in his community. Majorie Moffatt of West St. Modeste couldn't say enough about the great hospitality they received at the club and from people they met on the trails. Eldred Allen, Rigolet, took the course last January and has made a short ski trail in Rigolet but has a problem keeping it clear of skidoos. The only complaint from the group was the terribly cold temperatures- something we have no control over.

Ski safely and we'll see you on the trails.
