In a well known club one evening, Sat a number of bright men They were telling old jokes and stories Where no trouble troubled them One young fellow he grew quite serious He said, "Fellas, I'm gonna ask a question. In fact, I'll give my answer too."
"You're all jolly good fellows. Men of the world. Some of ye had adventures and out of the depths were hurled. Some of ye had sweethearts, some more, loving wives. So I'm gonna ask you gentlemen “What is the best thing in life?".
"The best thing is glory boys, fighting for freedom and flag And the best thing in life's story, is never let it drag. Crowds cheering, Coming home from the war in strife. That to me makes my heart beat in glory. For that to me, is the best thing in life".
They all sat there in silence as the smoke curled through the air. "Yes, this dear old,-general is right; for without a lot of war and strife, This world would be hard to fight".
Then there came a silence. Down came a hand quite strong. "Listen boys you're all wrong;- the best thing; in life is love, boys. There's nothing can beat it at all. Your mother's love, your sister's love, though you may rise or fall. The love of a sweetheart or baby and dearest of all: Little wife. Take all your war and your glory for love is the best thing in life." |
