The Teacher and The Adventurer

A Tribute to Uncle Allan Power

Submitted By: Glenn Power

My Uncle Allan Power was always one of the last to come in through the gut in the evening from fishing all day. As Dad and I  waited for him, Dad used to tell me that it was his brother, Allan, who taught him how to hunt, shoot, set snares, catch fish properly, and never to mind those foolish "ghost stories" when you are in the woods!!! Once in the 1950's my father was to meet Allan up by the graveyard early in the morning around 4 am to get a lesson in shooting partridges. As he arrived at the cemetery he saw no sign of anyone, it was dark after all. Dad nearly jumped out of his boots when he heard a cough, it was uncle Allan lying down by a headstone taking a "spell" for a minute. He laughed at dad and said, "don't be so nervous ‘bye, the dead are not going hurting ya" !!"

May 24th weekend 1976 was a foggy one. There was talk of a huge whale washed ashore in the Easter’ Cove. I was persistent in my quest to see this "creature" finally someone spoke up "Allan will take you" As I was on his back climbing down a cliff in some small cove it was truly more exciting than Disneyland. He must of been quite amused at me when we arrived at the site of this big bluish whale and I was afraid of it!!! He managed to get a tooth for me to bring back to St. John's. All my friends back in town almost didn't believe me only for the tooth Uncle Allan got for me!! It was proof of my great childhood adventure!!
