Fencing on The Hill

Terry Power

Growing up as a boy in Branch

Meant lots of different chores

Like shearing sheep, making hay

And going for the cows.

But a vivid thought comes to my head

And I laugh at it still

It’s the day I went with Sooley

Fencing on The Hill

Being fishing season

And late up in the spring

The task to driving all the stakes

Was left to me and him

With nails and hammer all in hand

We headed for The Nap

Spreading all those stakes in line

We tried to fill the gap.

With Sooley holding tightly to a stake

I did proceed to swing

And came down heavy with the mallet

And struck him on the brim.

He grabbed the mallet from my hand

And this to me did say

I do not trust you with this lad

Go with your friends and play
